Navigating 504s, IEPs, and special education services

Navigating the world of special education can feel like learning a new language during an already stressful time. When a child struggles in school due to ASD, learning disabilities, or emotional challenges, parents often face a complex web of legal requirements and clinical jargon. At Orion Behavioral Health Network, we believe that your child’s education should be a bridge to their success, not a barrier. Serving families in Anchorage, Eagle River, and Wasilla, Alaska, as well as Austin, Texas, and via tele-health in those states and Florida, our multidisciplinary team is here to help you secure the support your child deserves.

Understanding Your Options: IEPs vs. 504 Plans

While both 504 Plans and Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) provide support, they serve different clinical and legal purposes.

  • 504 Plans: These are designed to provide accommodations for students with disabilities that interfere with their ability to learn in a general education classroom. This might include extra time on tests, preferential seating, or sensory breaks.
  • IEPs: An IEP is a more comprehensive document for students who require specialized instruction. This often involves specific goals, modified curricula, and services like speech or occupational therapy.

The Importance of Psychological Testing

The first step in accessing special education services is obtaining a clear diagnostic picture. You cannot treat or accommodate what you have not identified. Our practice provides the psychological testing necessary to document a child’s specific needs. Whether we are assessing for ASD or specific learning disabilities, our psychiatrist, physician assistants, and licensed therapy providers work together to create a clinical roadmap. These evaluations provide the objective data that schools require to initiate the eligibility process.

A Collaborative Clinical Approach

At Alaska, Texas, and Florida’s Orion Behavioral Health Network, we don't just provide a diagnosis and send you on your way. We act as a clinical advocate for your child, helping parents understand the results of psychological testing so they can walk into a school meeting feeling empowered. By coordinating care between our psychiatric providers and your child's school, we ensure that the medical and educational aspects of their care are aligned.
